“Do it yourself-massage”

There are many overall and local benefits to massage. If there were not any benefits, then why has massage been around for over 3000 years?

Some overall benefits include:

Improved blood flow

Improves the elimination of toxic, waste products in the body, by stimulating the lymphatic system of the body.

Improves parasympathetic activity in the body (this is the side of the autonomic nervous system, that controls the rest and digest, side of things in the body). This then improves your sleep, digestion, recovery from exercise, creativity, immunity to colds and the ability to handle stress.

Improves ones self-esteem, if they have had, not too much physical contact for a while. Massage is great for this, as you are being touch by the therapist in a non-sexual way. This is more of a physiological benefit.

Improve suppleness in muscles; therefore, improves range of motion in joints.

Improves your strength in the gym. You should feel a lot stronger in the gym after a good deep tissue massage, if the therapist has done a good job.

Some local benefits include:

Reduced pain in muscle

Removal of trigger points in muscles. (Think of a knot in a elastic band)

Decompression of joints

Reduction of headaches

If you can’t see a therapist, then you can either use a tennis ball, medicine ball or a foam roller to “iron out” and tension you may have in your muscles, as show in the four videos below. It’s not as precise as seeing someone like me for a massage, but it’s a good alternative to get and keep your body loose.

Self-massage with a medicine ball

Neck massage with a tennis ball

Making use of a tennis ball and a wall

Self-massage on legs with a foam roller

The foam roller is another great tool; you can use to loosen up your body. It’s a great way to iron out and relax your muscles. It’s not quite as precise as using a tennis ball or getting a massage of a therapist. But it’s an easy and cheap way to self-manage you own body.

Best of luck,

Joe
